2014 Oregon Wilderness Conference Afternoon Activities (June 6th)

Birding With Audubon Society

There’s no better way to go bird watching in Oregon than with the Audubon Society. Their guides will take you on a mini trip to explore some of the feathered friends that call Portland home. No previous experience or knowledge necessary to participate, just bring yourself and we’ll take care of the rest.

Kayaking with Alder Creek

Explore the city of Portland from a different perspective. For the lucky six that sign up early and choose this option, Alder Creek will be guiding a trip around the Willamette.  This trip includes both a life jacket and kayak.

Rock Climbing with Mazamas

Enjoy rock climbing? Have you ever wanted to try? Mazamas is here to help! Their knowledgeable members will guide you through the steps to scale rocks and mountains. They will demonstrate basic gear and give you a chance on the wall. This is also available for those that have rock climbed before and looking to get a good climbing session in during the day!

Photo Hike with Outdoor Project

Join Outdoor Project on a photography hike right here in Portland on the Marquam Trail. We'll talk about the trail system that led to the creation of the 4-T Trail, explore urban nature, and you'll get a chance to photograph wildflowers, trees and one of Portland's best viewpoints along the way. Prepare for around 800 feet elevation gain from trailhead to council crest, just over 2 miles. Starting point will be the Marquam Shelter.

Native Plant Restoration with Columbia Slough Watershed Council

Join Columbia Slough help improve native habitat at Whitaker Ponds Nature Park. Volunteers will maintain native planting areas by hand-pulling invasive species and mulching to give native species the opportunity to grow and thrive over the summer growing season. No experience necessary. Be sure to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Tools, training and gloves will be provided. This event is suitable for a variety of ages.

Oregon Wild Photo Petition

What better way to participate in a Wilderness Conference than to raise your voice and take action? For those looking for an easy, fun way to get involved, join Oregon Wild as we develop a photo petition that will be sent to congress. In the age of online petitions, this action personalizes and raises your voice by putting a face to a name. We'll be asking Congress to finish the job that was started many years ago - to pass Wilderness legislation for the permanent protection of the Devil's Staircase.
