
On May 3, 2022 after nearly a century long absence, the first two California condors (prey-go-neesh) were reintroduced by the Yurok Tribe and Redwood National and State Parks in Northern California! This incredibly momentous occasion brought North America’s largest bird back to its ancestral range, and symbolized cultural restoration and healing for the Yurok people. Ann Vilesis from Kalmiopsis Audubon, and Kelli Walker, Senior California Condor Keeper who oversees the Oregon Zoo's condor conservation breeding program discussed important conservation efforts to bring the species back from the brink of extinction.
