Virtual Climate Forests Hike

A man hikes through a forest text: These forests have a story - let's tell it. Virtual climate hike for Earth Day.

Spring is here and you know you’re dying to get outside on a new adventure, or maybe to your favorite tried-and-true trail. While I have too many favorites to choose from, chances are you’ve got a forest you love to return to again and again - or, one you’ve been meaning to visit (great options here! https://oregonwild.org/explore-oregon/suggested-outings) Look no further for an excuse! Now through May 2nd, we invite you to get outside and celebrate Earth Day by visiting your favorite forest (or finding a favorite photo from the past) and adding to the grassroots call for action to protect our forests and our climate.

Today, our forests need our help more than ever. Numerous logging projects across the state are slated to cut down mature and old-growth forests — one of our best lines of defense against the future impacts of climate change. Our climate forests provide drinking water to most Oregonians, and store vast amounts of carbon. These trees are worth more standing.

We’re encouraging our supporters to use social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – which our national leaders pay close attention to – to ensure decision-makers understand there is widespread public support for protecting mature and old-growth forests on federal lands.

To participate, take a picture or short video of a favorite forest or tree and tell the Biden Administration how important these trees and forests are by posting it on one or more social media channels. You are also welcome to use pictures from past hikes, camping trips and adventures in our forests! Be sure to include the hashtags #ClimateForest, #ClimateForestHike and #WorthMoreStanding. We will compile a selection of posts and pictures and mail them to the Biden Administration with the request that the administration conserve mature and old-growth forests on federal lands as a critical climate solution. We will also feature your photos and videos in social media posts throughout the campaign.

With your help, we can tell these forests’ story and show President Biden and other national leaders why we value our older forests and work to keep them standing. Please join us and many partners nationwide for a virtual Climate Forest hike!
