Guided Hike

Grasshopper Project Area Outing

July 27, 2024

Explore a beautiful landscape targeted for logging under the Grasshopper Project and learn about the area's climate, wildlife, and biodiversity values.

Hiker looking over the Grasshopper Logging Project in Oregon by Oregon Wild

Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 3 miles total (in short segments)
Elevation Gain: 800 feet
Leader: Victoria Wingell, Forests and Climate Campaigner, and John Persell, Staff Attorney
Location: Mount Hood National Forest

The southeast side of Mount Hood offers wildflower meadows, a diverse mix of forest types, grand views from rocky outcrops, and a legacy of both wilderness protection efforts and extensive logging. Oregon Wild challenged the proposed Grasshopper Project last year, which would have logged 5,000 acres including mature forests needed in our fight against climate change. On this outing, we’ll explore some of the forests that are a part of the proposed timber sale and climb up Rocky Butte, where a lookout platform once graced a large Ponderosa pine. Even without the platform, there is a commanding view from here of whole project area, the Badger Creek Wilderness, and Mount Hood.

Carpools will be available from Portland.

The goal of Oregon Wild’s outdoor program is to connect our supporters to the places we work to protect and conserve. Our guided hikes and outings are led by staff members with experience in our conservation campaigns, knowledge about the natural world, and a passion for Oregon’s wild places and wildlife. Our programs offer an educational experience and a connection to advocacy for the places we visit. We strive to make our outdoor programs inviting and safe for everyone.

Your hike leader will get you additional information with specifics about a meeting time and location, difficulty level, and any other details about your hike after you register.
