Tell Congress: Don’t Sell Off Public Lands!
Congress is once again eyeing a national public lands fire sale — to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
When bipartisan public lands advocates rallied to defeat a proposal to sell public lands in Utah and Nevada, we knew it would not be long before the terrible idea reared its ugly head once again. Only a few weeks later, and the proposal is back, bigger, and worse than ever.
Senator Mike Lee has introduced a budget bill that would force the sale of up to 3.2 million acres of public lands—including right here in Oregon.
These lands would be sold to help pay for Trump’s tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the ultra-wealthy, while increasing costs for the poorest and most vulnerable households. And while the bill claims to promote housing, there are no safeguards to prevent luxury estates or irresponsible development deep in our forests and fire-prone areas.
This bill doesn’t require affordability, doesn’t protect recreation or wildlife, puts drinking water at risk, and doesn’t make communities safer.
We’ve defeated proposals like this before. We’re called to do it again. Reach out to Congress and tell them, once again, that public lands need to stay in public hands! If you live in Oregon, we’re asking you to write to Governor Tina Kotek as well, urging her to work with the Oregon Congressional delegation to stand up for our public lands.
