Alsea Falls Mushroom ID Outing

October 31, 2026
9:00am-3:00pm

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 2 to 3 miles total
Elevation Gain: up to 300 feet
Leader: Bruce Newhouse and Peg Boulay (Ecologists) and Chandra LeGue (Oregon Wild’s Senior Conservation Advocate)
Location: Alsea Falls area in Coast Range

Learn all about mushroom ecology and identification from two of Eugene’s most knowledgeable and fun experts – Bruce Newhouse and Peg Boulay. This outing, which will take place on BLM public lands in the Coast Range an hour from Eugene, will explore forests of different ages and the many fungi growing in them – from LBMs (little brown mushrooms) to the sought-after golden chanterelle. We’ll take a short walk together, spend time hiking further in small groups, then come back together to ID our prizes with the experts. Given the time of year, we are also likely to see salmon in the proposed Wild & Scenic South Fork Alsea River. Don’t worry, we’ll have you back to town in time for Trick or Treating!

The goal of Oregon Wild’s outdoor program is to connect our supporters to the places we work to protect and conserve. Our guided hikes and outings are led by staff members with experience in our conservation campaigns, knowledge about the natural world, and a passion for Oregon’s wild places and wildlife. Our programs offer an educational experience and a connection to advocacy for the places we visit. We strive to make our outdoor programs inviting and safe for everyone.
