Join us in celebrating the induction of Swick Old-Growth Site Trail in the Malheur National Forest into the national Old-Growth Forest Network. Participants will learn about the history, ecology, management, and old-growth forests characteristics of the area with a guided 1-mile walk. Some of the Ponderosa Pines in this forest are over 300 years old and are host to several bird and bat species of concern that depend on open late-successional ponderosa pine woodlands. In addition, recent prescribed burns and their effects can be observed. The trail is universally accessible and open to all. Please bring water and feel free to stay for a picnic lunch.
This hike will be co-led by natural history author Marina Richie, and supported by Ashley Martens of the Old-Growth Forest Network and local Forest Service staff.
The Swick Old Growth Interpretive Site is 17.5 miles south of John Day and 7.5 miles north of Seneca on US Highway 395. Signs easily mark the turn east, which is directly across the highway from the Izee-Paulina Road. Parking and restrooms are available at the trailhead.
The goal of Oregon Wild’s outdoor program is to connect our supporters to the places we work to protect and conserve. Our guided hikes and outings are led by staff members with experience in our conservation campaigns, knowledge about the natural world, and a passion for Oregon’s wild places and wildlife. Our programs offer an educational experience and a connection to advocacy for the places we visit. We strive to make our outdoor programs inviting and safe for everyone.
