Wild Thursday Event
On July 31st, Oregon Wild and Schilling Cider will host local environmentalist and author, Rand Schenck at Schilling’s SE Portland cider house for discussion of his book Forest Under Siege: The Story of Old Growth After Gifford Pinchot published by Basalt Books at WSU Press. Rand Schenck examines 100 years of Pacific Northwest forestry, through the lens of forestry practices on the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. From Gifford Pinchot’s early stewardship through decades of relentless logging, and the ultimate return towards the recovery and rebirth of old-growth forests, Schenck offers his expert perspective of the triumphs and challenges of conserving old-growth forests.
“This exquisitely researched book gets to the soul of the Forest Service that successfully resisted corruption.” —Gifford Pinchot III, Grandson of Gifford Pinchot
Rand Schenck began his forestry-focused environmental activism career in the late 1970s at the Sierra Club, where he emerged as a leader for the next 15 years. Upon moving to Oregon in 1996, Rand became a board member of Oregon Wild, continuing his dedicated work to environmental activism. Within the past decade, Rand has shifted his focus to concentrate on combating climate change, helping form grassroot nonprofits 350PDX and Mobilizing Climate Action Together (MCAT).
Want to read the book in advance and bring your copy for signing? Order a copy of Forest Under Siege from Basalt Books at WSU Press. Books will also be available for purchase for $25 cash or check at the event.
Oregon Wild is thrilled to welcome Rand back to engage with Oregon Wild members on this Wild Thursday event. This event is free, however we do ask that you register ahead of time.
