Marys Peak “Crepuscular Crawl”

September 7, 2025
5:30 to 9:00pm

Siuslaw National Forest west of Corvallis

Difficulty: Easy
Distance: 2 miles total
Elevation Gain: 500 feet
Leader: Phenix Johnson (Oregon Wild’s Communications Associate)
Location: Siuslaw National Forest west of Corvallis

The shift from day to night in the coastal range ushers in a spectacular moment in forest ecology. The crepuscular hours of dusk and dawn allow an overlap of nocturnal and diurnal flora and fauna, as some get ready to settle in for the night, and others begin to venture out on their nightly activities. On this outing, we will arrive at 6:30pm to take a short hike through the forest and meadows surrounding Marys Peak as we learn about the adaptations that wildlife make to survive in different light levels, and how trees and the forest react to changing light levels. We’ll end the evening on the summit watching the moon rise as the sun sets around 7:45. We will then make our way back to our cars and head home for the night.

Carpools will be facilitated from locations TBD.

The goal of Oregon Wild’s outdoor program is to connect our supporters to the places we work to protect and conserve. Our guided hikes and outings are led by staff members with experience in our conservation campaigns, knowledge about the natural world, and a passion for Oregon’s wild places and wildlife. Our programs offer an educational experience and a connection to advocacy for the places we visit. We strive to make our outdoor programs inviting and safe for everyone.
