Webcast: Secrets of the Dunes

Rippling yellow stand of the Oregon dunes

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches across the Central Coast of Oregon, forming a dynamic landscape that depends on shifting sand to sustain its native ecology. As one of the world’s largest temperate coastal dune systems, it attracts thousands of visitors each year and provides habitat for a variety of plants and animals—some found in few other places.

In 1972, Congress designated this 31,500-acre section of the Siuslaw National Forest as a National Recreation Area in recognition of its unique ecological and recreational value. However, non-native plants are rapidly stabilizing the dunes, covering much of the open sand and disrupting the natural dune processes.
